Kristina Portillo is no stranger to business travel. As a former consultant, she understands the challenges of staying healthy on the road. Despite her hectic schedule and flying 75,000 miles a year, she was able to maintain her figure and wellbeing after much trial and error. She cracked a strategy comprised of planned meals and snacks, hotel workouts and carry on fitness accessories and she founded Business Travel Life to help others do the same. She tells Travelle all about it.
How did you come up with the idea to launch Business Travel Life?
While traveling for work as a consultant, I dealt with weight gain and lethargy from eating and drinking too much. I realized I had to stop treating business travel like a vacation and get into a better routine on the road.
When preparing for trips, I started researching healthy places to eat, packing food to carry on with me, and making a point of always exercising regardless of how busy my days were. Other travelers would ask me about my workout routines and commenting on how healthy I was eating during conferences. I realized there was an opportunity to help.
I decided to resign from my position as a consultant and formed Business Travel Life. I have always had an interest in fitness and nutrition and it was an opportunity for me to pursue a career in a field I was passionate about while doing something positive for other road warriors. I earned my certification as a personal trainer and a nutrition coach and created my business.
How do you come up with recommendations for your clients?
Our meal and workout plans are 100% customized for each client taking into account their goals (weight loss, maintenance, etc.), and preferences, such as foods they like or dislike, allergies and workouts they enjoy the most and find to be the most effective.
Every week each client sends us his or her upcoming travel schedule to us and we create a specific meal plan including pre-selecting restaurants and what to order. We try to make the meal recommendations a bit more flexible that the average weight loss program, because I understand sometimes you have to have a drink and order an appetizer to be social when entertaining clients.
Do your plans only apply to travel days?
Our plans are actually structured for 7 days a week, which often includes time at home. We of course provide workouts and meal options for home and the office, including recipes for home cooked meals. This way our clients can have a sense of continuity in their habits regardless of schedule or location.
What types of travel workout options do you offer?
Our workouts are also very customized with specific hotels and preferences taken into account. We have some clients who refuse to enter the hotel gym, so we offer workouts they can do in their room like TRX or resistance bands or even pool workouts. We are also very excited about our client app that allows clients to access their workouts from a phone or tablet and includes how to videos with each exercise.
We also offer virtual personal training. One of the things I often hear from road warriors is that they struggle to fit in personal training sessions due to their busy schedules and when they are home, they want to spend time with their family. Virtual personal training allows travelers to have the experience of being in a gym with a trainer while on the go. The clients are held accountable for still have the accountability of working out, but it can be scheduled on their time and in any location.
How do you pick the restaurants for your clients to dine at?
Generally, we try to find airport restaurants near the gate that the client departs from or arrives to, and options convenient to the location near where they are staying. We can also research specific restaurants and menus if the client has a business lunch or dinner so that they arrive prepared.
How much do your services cost?
Services start at $100 per month. A lot of the packages we offer are bundled to encourage overall healthy lifestyle changes. Those include a meal plan, a workout plan and option for virtual personal training. We do, however, offer the services on an individual basis.
