Have Fun on a Solo Vacation

Have Fun on a Solo Vacation

It may not be entirely cost efficient (or the safest), but going on vacation alone is one of the best ways to discover yourself while exploring the world. Solo travel lets you do exactly what you want, when you want, and how you want sans objections. Whether history is your thing or trying local food is your adventure, I can assure you you’ll find the right destination to perfectly complement your interests and make for an amazing getaway. Here are Travelle's favorite tips for having fun while traveling alone and making most of these "me moments"!

Love Your Temporary Home

As much as you’ll want to spend all of your time out and about, you’ll need a little R&R eventually. Choose a hotel with amenities that don’t call for a plus one to enjoy the downtime. WiFi, cable TV, or a gym are the basic options, but if you want a little extra, look for a hotel with live music or other special events for guests, a great spa or a balcony where you can take photographs of the fantastic view.

Plan Ahead

No matter how creative you can be on the spot, a little preparation will never hurt. Do the research on your travel spot ahead of time so you know which activities to book in advance and what kind of wardrobe to bring. Even if you decide against pre-booking, you’ll still know what to expect!

Take Yourself Out

The biggest problem I had when I first started traveling solo was finding things to do at night. For a girl, going to a bar or club by yourself are hardly options. But I soon discovered the joys of theatersconcerts, cinemas and sports bars where you don’t need a partner crime to enjoy great entertainment. Surround yourself with other people in a safe, energetic environment and you’ll have a fantastic time people watching and making new friends!

Opt For Group Fun

Wandering a city alone is great for discovering local and non-touristy spots, but from time to time, joining a group tour or activity can add some fun to your trip. You’ll meet likeminded people while gaining cultural context. If you’re on a beach getaway, take a fun yoga or rock climbing class. If you’re in a city, try a local cooking class. It will be impossible to not feel energized afterwards!

Go Social

Post on social media to find out if any of your friends or friends of friends will be visiting the same location. You’ll be a Facebook message away from meeting up with a familiar face in a foreign city for dinner or a drink.

Look For Locals

If you're shy this might not be an option, but spending time with locals is a fantastic way to get personal with your surroundings. There are plenty of services that let you find people who are happy (and qualified) to show travelers the best hidden gems their city has to offer. You can dine in a chef’s home, partake in unique cultural experiences and actually live like a native.

When you prepare for traveling alone with proper planning and the right mentality, solo travel can be just as fun as exploring with friends—and maybe even better!
